We all want to know how to draw cartoon dog. Isn’t it because many of us have a dog at home?

My guess is: yes it is! In this lesson you will learn in few simple steps how to draw it. As I always say, first, observe this picture carefully.

Body posture, height of the head, its size in relation to the body, etc.

The fun is, that you can create your own cartoon expression.

Your drawing doesn’t need to be exactly the same like this one.

So take it easy and don’t sweat to make this an exact copy.

Your drawing will be just fine. That’s why it’s cartoon :)

Following this tutorial you’ll quickly learn how to draw cartoon dog. You’ll be amazed how simple it is.

Draw three circles as you see here. These three circles represent the head, the chest and the back of the dog’s body.

If possible draw them in the same or similar position and distance to each other as on this picture. These first three circles will determine the shape and size of your cartoon dog.

Next to the head-circle draw an ellipse. This will represent the part of dog’s mouth.

On the back, draw another two “noodles”, these are the outlines of dog’s thighs. Notice, that one “noodle” looks like an up-side-down egg and another one (far side) looks like a bean.

Now, join the chest ball and the back ball together by a softly curved line.

Use similar softly curved lines to join chest-head, head-mouth…and…draw all four legs.

Generally, drawing animal’s legs might be quite a challenge. But here, you should be able to do it easily.

Now, you almost know how to draw cartoon dog :) …well, not yet exactly. After a few details we are almost there.

Draw the tail. As you see this dog is a Terrier-like and Terriers have short tails.

Draw the eye and the mouth. It should be smiling, because it looks friendlier.

Do not mind if you make some small mistakes by pencil here and there. It is cartoon, not a portrait. Be easy about it. Whatever the outcome is, it is just fine. If you are not satisfied with it, you can draw a new - better one.

I always recommend to draw every picture at least 3 x (three times) so that you can memorize the strokes and refine them.

Now, erase all unnecessary help-guide-lines you drew in the beginning. Use eraser as necessary that is why we have pencil-type-erasers.
After you erase all unnecessary lines you will get a clean outline of the cartoon dog body.

Don’t forget to draw the ears :)

So far you had mainly thin pencil lines. Now, draw a distinct clear outline. I used soft pencil 4B. If you don’t have such soft graphite pencil handy, ordinary HB is also OK.

Start working on eyes first. Make the black iris and leave the small shiny white dot in the middle – first, observe the eyes on the picture carefully!

Darken the nose and work out the rest of the body parts as seen on the picture.

You can also create your own version of cute cartoon if you like. Use as much creativity as you can. It’s cartoon!

How About This Cute One?

Now, let’s learn how to draw a dog in motion. This may look difficult, but in fact is very easy, as you’ll see below.

Draw three ellipses in the same position as on this picture.

One represents dog’s head, the middle one is the body (belly) and the third one is the back.

Size and position of these here ellipses will determine the size of your drawing. If this is your first cartoon dog drawing then I recommend drawing them the same or very similar as on this picture.

Join the ellipses by slightly curved lines. Notice that space between the joining lines is different. The neck space is thinner and the body space is thicker.

Draw the muzzle (mouth) part with the tongue out. Draw the ears.

Draw the rest of the body parts, all four legs and the tail.
You’ll get a “transparent” - like drawing that looks like a ghost.
Here, you can clearly see how the structure of this drawing is made.

Now, draw two round circles on the head ellipse. Vertical one represents the guideline for centering the muzzle (mouth) part.
The horizontal guideline will help you to place the eye. Later you will be able to draw the eyes without guidelines.

Begin to erase all unnecessary lines so that you’ll get a clearer picture.

You see, learning how to draw cartoon dog is not big deal. It is in fact very simple if you know the basic technique. Now you know it :)

By softer pencil (B4 or B6) draw a clear outer contour.

Work out the eyes part, the iris and don’t forget to leave a small white dot in the middle of the iris. Darken the opened mouth. The tongue remains uncolored.

You have now a complete and clearly contoured cartoon dog.

Now it’s time for coloring. I used only B4 soft graphite pencil, but you can use color pencils and make it even better :)

Darken the ears, the tail and the tip of the nose. Leave a small white spot so that it will look alive.

Slightly shade the whole body, leaving the paws and belly white. Your cartoon dog is ready :)
