Andy Leslie’s gallery is truly an amazing sight. His realistic portrait
pencil drawings are simply stunning. The theme of Elvis Presley pencil
drawings is probably one of the best I can imagine.
We all know Elvis and therefore can see how awesomely well he captures
his face features and expressions. These realistic drawings truly look
like photos!
Drawing realistic portraits of people may be quite a challenge. Most of
us are drawing them from photos because that is one of the easiest ways,
yet not everyone is able to capture the very essence of the portrait.
Human face has a very specific set of characteristics. Someone can learn
and master those just by intuition and a little practice, while others
need to study the proportions, dimensions and shapes like math.
In portrait drawings, if you make a slight mistake, a wrong pencil
stroke on critically important place, it may completely affect the
entire portrait. Those subtle strokes and lines, those super tiny
details are the most important factors.
Did you know that every face is defined by the following 3 features?
If you get these three done right, then the rest of the face – even if
you make some slight mistakes – will look like the person’s true
portrait.
If the portrait you draw is someone famous, like a musician, a celebrity
or a historical figure, then it is even bigger challenge because
everyone knows the face, and the judgment can be severe…
…if you make any small mistake, everyone can recognize that almost
instantly, so the audience pressure for “perfection” is even harder. But
let’s not slip into that useless “pressure cooker”. This website is not
a drawing competition or perfection and no pressure is required.
We all want to feel at ease and relaxed. We are learning how to draw
here. It is also very natural that not all drawings or sketches would
look like a photocopy, and that is the beauty.
As Andy Leslie often comments on himself, he is still learning the art
of realistic drawing. We can all see the significant progress on each of
his portrait drawings.
If you are portrait drawing enthusiast, or you just want to learn how to
draw portraits, Andy’s page may be a perfect place to observe the
details on these drawings.
I believe you can get a lot of inspiration from his awesome artwork and apply those experiences to your own portrait drawings.
