Flames

I was wondering how you would shade in the flames. It's simple when drawing the outline of the flames but when it comes to black and white, how do I know what part of the flame to shade in?

shading the flame

The best way (I know it sounds obvious) is to observe a real flame for a while. Even better would be a photo because the real flame is unstable and always in motion.
However, the flame whether real or photo will always look different than a drawing. By observing the flame, you will be able to capture the essence of the flame and its light.
